Unsure what financial aid opportunities are available to you? Explore federal and state loans and grants.  These programs provide means for eligible college students to fund tuition, books, fees or childcare.

Federal loans

A student can fund a college education through a federal loan programs. The money must be paid back at a later date.  The government provides the following federal loan opportunities:

  • Federal Stafford Loans. The U.S. Department of Education administers these subsidized and unsubsidized loans.  The amount of money loaned is determined by financial need.
  • Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS).  This loan program is intended for parents who have dependents enrolled in undergraduate programs at least half-time.

Federal grants

Unlike federal loans, federal grants do not have to be paid back. Students are encouraged to pursue the following federal grant opportunities:

  • Federal Pell Grant. The federal Pell grant program awards an amount based on financial need.
  • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).  This grant is for students with exceptional financial needs.
  • National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grant. This program awards money to eligible students in their third and fourth years of study.
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant. This grant is intended for students who have completed rigorous secondary school programs and are currently enrolled in undergraduate programs.

Minnesota state loans and grants

  • Minnesota Sate Grant.  For Minnesota residents, this program awards grants based on financial need.
  • Minnesota Post-Secondary Child Care Grant.  This grant is intended for students with young children and provides assistance with childcare costs.
  • Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF). Students enrolled in secondary schools at least half-time may be eligible for this loan program.
