Offering associate degrees and diplomas in massage therapy
At GU/MSB-Elk River, students may pursue an associate degree or diploma in the field of massage therapy.
Associate in Applied Science in Massage Therapy. The associate program in massage therapy teaches basic massage techniques such as Swedish, pregnancy and special populations, myofascial release, hot stone, deep tissue, trigger point and sports massage. Additionally, students learn the advanced techniques of craniosacral therapy and lymph drainage.
Students also take business courses and general education electives that complement technical courses with practice in communications and interpersonal relations and provide perspectives on diversity.
Massage Therapy Diploma. The massage therapy diploma program at GU/MSB-Elk River provides students with training for immediate employment. They can enter the workforce and begin receiving a paycheck as quickly as possible. Diploma students take core technical courses that teach them massage techniques and business concepts, vital skills they need to be successful massage therapists.
Students can complete the massage therapy diploma program in just one year. If a student chooses to return for the associate degree program in massage therapy, most coursework from the diploma program will transfer as credit towards the associate degree.
Externships and certifications
Before graduation, massage therapy students participate in externships at local businesses, applying their massage techniques and business skills to real-world situations. Students often tell us that the most valuable part of the program is the externship experience. Graduates are eligible to sit for certification exams such as:
- The National Certification Exam of Therapeutic Massage (NCETM) provided by National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB)
- Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx) provided by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)
They may be able to receive reimbursement of exam costs through our Professional Certification Scholarship.
